Brawl Playstyles & Skills pt.6

Check out Kos-mos sporting white Peach in Melee.

In a lot of ways, looking at this high level Melee match between two Peach players gives me data on how to counter some of Peaches strategies in Brawl. Apparently, rolling past the pressure created from Peaches floating forward air is a good counter. Also, Peach doesn't handle platforms well. I remember beating Smiles, a well known Texas Melee Peach player, at Evo by playing the entire game by fighting on platforms. I have a wealth of knowledge at my disposal, yet I decided to use none of it in my battle with Kos-mos. I figured it was time to write a new page specifically for Brawl Peach. Let's see how that turned out.

  • Name: KirbyKid
  • Characters: Pit, Kirby, Sheik/Zelda, Pokemon Trainer
  • Best Skill: Timing (spacing)
  • Most Wanted Skill: Adaptation (changing one's strategy)
  • The Skill You Press Over Opponents: Adaptation (changing one's strategy)
  • Most Prominent Playstyle: All the above styles
  • Name: KOS-MOS
  • Characters: Peach
  • Best Skill: Timing (spacing)
  • Most Wanted Skill: Adaptation (changing one's strategy)
  • The Skill You Press Over Opponents: Knowledge (data)
  • Most Prominent Playstyle: The Learner/ R&D style

The Learner/R&D playstyle can be a difficult to recognize. Essentially, when a player plays to experiment for the purpose of gaining knowledge rather than playing to win, they're using the R&D playstyle. Friendly matches are a commonplace for such a playstyle because the players have nothing to lose (except maybe their seat at the station). In the match above, I resolved to play on the ground to see just how good Peach was at pressuring and how hard it would be to counter the pressure.

When it's all said and done and you're sitting on a pile of data gathered by your research, what do you do with it? Do you post on smashboards? Share it with your friends? Mull over the match up and tweak your game? Do you form new questions? Do you seek answers for the questions that remain? What good is data that's not put to use?

I wonder what Kos-mos learned form our battle.
